FAKTURA

Media of the Sciences
October 3rd to November 9th, 2013

An exhibition organized by Leuphana Arts Program (LAP), hosted by Kunstraum of Leuphana University of Lüneburg

with Martin John Callanan (UK), Driessens & Verstappen (NL), Sabrina Raaf (US), Jan-Peter E.R. Sonntag (DE), and Herwig Turk (AT/PT)

In the exhibition “Faktura”, which takes place on the occasion of the GfM conference at Leuphana, artists such as Martin John Callanan (UK), Driessens & Verstappen (NL), Sabrina Raaf (US), Jan-Peter E.R. Sonntag (D) and Herwig Turk (A/PT) reflect on the aesthetics of scientific instruments, models and methods.

Art and science have a complex and tense relationship. The exhibition of the Leuphana Arts Program presents five artistic positions that do not aim to visualize scientific projects or research fields with their methods and results, but rather reflect on the possibilities of knowledge and cognition in their own aesthetic mode and offer interpretations of scientific observations, data sets and scenarios. By focusing on gray areas of scientific perception, the works and projects in the exhibition sharpen the view of the medial and epistemological conditions of scientific practice.

In the workshop of the same name, the artists present their projects and discuss with the participants the specific cognitive possibilities of artistic research and representation. They address the possibilities and limits of interweaving art and science and open up a view of the broad spectrum of definitions and practices of artistic research.
