What do we talk about when we talk about… with Dani Gal

As part of What do we talk about when we talk about…, video artist Dani Gal (Berlin) will be presenting his film A Woman of Valor on December 4 at 4:00 pm in the Kunstraum at Leuphana University. The film accompanies Holocaust survivor, contemporary witness, activist and writer Hedy Epstein (1924-2016) on her return to her childhood home in southern Germany, from which she was expelled as a Jewish child in 1939. Throughout her life, Hedy Epstein not only campaigned against Nazi Germany (Nuremberg Doctors’ Trials), but also fought for the rights of Palestinians. She talks about both and more in Dani Gal’s film. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Dani Gal.

What do we talk about when we talk about … is an irregular series of reading sessions that respond to the acceleration and polarization of public discourse in light of the escalation of violence in Palestine, Israel and the Middle East. The format aims to return to a core skill of critical study, namely reading and discussing texts, sharpening terms and developing concepts. The sessions will be moderated by guests who have already published texts on aspects of this broad field and long conflict. The sessions are open to all students and members of the university. Please register for each session at kunstraum@leuphana.de. Texts will be sent out after registration. All sessions will take place in the Kunstraum with the exception of the session on Jan 28, 2025 that will take place at the Heinrich-Heine-Haus, Lüneburg.
