Reading Club II: “Photographic Evangels” by Susan Sontag

Reading session
09.05.2025, 14 Uhr

Kuntsraum invites to a collective reading session of the chapter “Photographic Evangels”, by Susan Sontag, from the book On Photography.

Side by side with Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin and Rosalind Franklin, Susan Sontag joins a core of thinkers that reflect on the uses of photography. “Photographic Evangels”, the fifth chapter of her book “On Photography”, critically reflects on photography as not a mere medium of representation of the world, but as a powerful tool for social and political commentary. How can we actualize this classic text today? Drawing on the exhibition’s title and subtitle, “An archive of resilience”, we invite the visitors to reflect about the memorial aspects that emerge with images, and on the constitution of an imagetic archive mediated by queerness, freedom and resilience.
