Chicha Express | Sonja Ortiz and Emilio Urbay - Momento Moche

Scenic ritual
14 Mai

Die musikalische Performance erweckt die alte peruanische Moche-Kultur durch psychedelische Klänge und Szenen zum Leben. Ein immersives Ritual, das alle Sinne weckt.

Originally from Supe, Peru, Emilio Urbay is a musician and composer living in Berlin since 2016 and bringing together an impressive range of instruments—from the Charango and Cajón Peruano to the electric bass. As part of PACHACAMAC, he has toured worldwide, and with his bands LA CHICHARRA and LOS CHACALES, he has celebrated the Peruvian genre Chicha on an international stage, making it well-known far beyond Berlin. In 2021, he received a nomination for the LISTEN TO BERLIN Award for his composition PALO SANTO. For over twenty years, Emilio has played and explored pre-Hispanic instruments from ancient Peru, currently boasting a collection of over a hundred instruments with which he performs at conferences, exhibitions, and shows. Since 2019, he has collaborated with Sonja Ortiz as a composer and musician on theater and film projects. His work is a call to appreciate and preserve cultural heritage while fostering a global musical dialogue.

Sonja Ortiz is a director, producer, and actress from Berlin that has been working with Emilio Urbay since 2019. Her work is interdisciplinary and interculturally oriented, operating at the intersection of spoken theater, performance, dance, and audiovisual forms. The relevance of ancient mythologies for contemporary performances in an urban space shaped by migration movements is central to her artistic creation. The narratives she develops challenge established power structures and thus open new perspectives.
